Learn About Digital Product Passports (DPPs)
Digital Product Passports
Learn everything your businesses needs to know about DPPs before they become mandatory.
Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are digital records that accompany physical products.
DPPs enhance transparency and traceability throughout a product’s value chain.
Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are becoming mandatory in the EU, starting in 2026.
WHAT ARE DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORTS?
Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are digital records that accompany physical products, providing comprehensive information about their lifecycle. Each product has its own digital twin or an “identity card” that can be accessed electronically.
Each DPP is linked to a unique product identifier, most often a QR code, that is printed on the product, its packaging, or documentation. When scanned with a smart device, this identifier provides access to a wealth of structured, machine-readable data. This data can cover everything from the product’s origin and the materials used (including their sourcing and composition), to manufacturing processes, environmental impact (like carbon footprint), repair and maintenance instructions, and guidance for recycling or proper disposal at the end of its life. The information within a DPP is intended to be continuously updated as the product moves through its lifecycle.

Brian Cook, our Chief Product Officer, introduces the topic of Digital Product Passports.
WHY DOES MY BUSINESS NEED DPPs?
Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are becoming mandatory in the EU, starting with textiles and other product categories in 2026 and 2027, with full implementation across various sectors expected by 2030. The specific timelines and product categories are defined by the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
The main goal of DPPs, especially driven by initiatives like the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), is to enhance transparency and traceability throughout a product’s value chain. This supports the transition towards a more circular economy.
“QR code-based DPPs level the playing field. Large corporations and small businesses alike can achieve similar transparency benefits at minimal cost. Polytag’s technology transforms regulatory compliance from a burden into a competitive advantage, helping businesses build trust, demonstrate values, and connect authentically with conscious consumers.”
