A new era of recycling
Polytag is working with Ocado Retail to reward shoppers with 20p per item recycled from their own homes using the Bower app.
The opportunity is running on Ocado’s own milk lines, with the potential for expansion in the near future. The scheme enables Polytag to prove the appetite for a Digital Deposit Return Scheme in an industry led project, using GS1 Digital Link QR codes.
The unique-every-time QR code enables customers to redeem 20p due to a decreased chance of fraud. Once scanned, it can’t be scanned again.
The QR code also transports customers to a landing page filled with informative sustainability and recycling information. The inital pilot was launched in November 2022 and has expanded to more milk lines and has no end-date in sight.
The QR codes are GS1 approved and printed by Interket UK. The method of printing is a world-first, and gives each item of packaging its own identity, finally giving brands deeper insight into the packaging lifecycle. Now, Ocado can know how their packaging is disposed of and recycled.
